Precedent 5: Auditorio de Tenerife

Auditorio de Tenerife (2003) by Santiago Calatrava Valls

Location:  Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary IslandsSpain)
Use: Public Auditorium
Material: Reinforced Concrete
Site Area: 23,000m2
Total floor area: 6,471m2

This is a piece of architectural spectacle. The way that the concrete "mould forms and defy the laws of gravity, as the ridge that falls from the sky" as Calatrava explains. This precedent has finalised the idea of using concrete for my design in order to create curved exterior walls. Concrete is a truly remarkable material, and in Calatrava's Auditorio de Tenerife, the concrete "wave" arising from the base structure weighs "3,500 tonnes" yet stands strong, dominating the surrounding landscape.

Auditorio de Tenerife has affirmed my concerns about how one can mould concrete forms of the most extreme whilst remaining strong. I feel that know it is a case of creating some designs of my own and begin to model them with clay to gain a better understanding of how these curvature forms will behave.
